I think it helps to keep the frame rails / subframe from separating. When I tried to install a DTS (drive train stabilizer) to my '98.5, which mounts in the same location as the tie bar seen in the picture, the DTS didn't quite line up. It was as though the frame had slightly separated in the middle. The same DTS fit just fine on my 2001.5 which came stock with a tie bar.
