Urgent help request. Cam timing. CCT.
Hello AudiForum members. I have an 01 2.8 A4. I'm nearing the end of a cam chain tensioner job and am freaking out a bit.
So here we go. I had the idle dropping and the loud tapping. Hooked up the computer and got the POO22 code for bank 2 camshaft position timing over retarded. So I ordered a new CCT and next day took off valve cover. It was definitely the problem as the chain was riding on metal and there were 3 pieces of chewed up shoe laying in there.
Now I turned the engine until intake cam was lining up at top dead center. Then I marked the chain and sprocket with white pencil. I then removed intake cam..leaving exhaust cam alone..and was able to get tensioner out.
I replaced the tensioner and put the intake cam back in to where it lines up TDC again. But now I'm looking more closely at the exhaust cam and it's not at TDC but off by a tooth to the right.
Now I'm wondering what the heck. Did it move? I don't think so because the white pencil mark is lining up. And I'm looking at pictures I took before removing the intake cam and it looks like that's where it was before I removed anything. I don't know why I didn't look more closely at exhaust cam timing mark when setting the intake cam at TDC. But I didn't. Either way its looking like it was off before I started the job.
So my question is....do I adjust my intake cam to the right a tooth now to make both cams align? Or do I reassemble it the way it was when I removed it? I'll link pictures below.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well after talking with my pops. He said he saw that timing mark was off when he stopped by to give me a hand yesterday. And I better put it back the way I found it. I tend to agree because I don't know enough about the timing to do anything else. I don't want to damage anything worse than it is..so I'm reassembling now with that exhaust mark off by a tooth.
