are the cam chain tensioner seals pretty easy to replace?

 

I would not call it easy. The labor for cam chain tensioner seals a the dealer is about $1000 or more (the parts are under $50). A tool is required for compressing the tensioner too. I haven't done the job myself (maybe someone who has can better explain) but I have watched my mechanic do it as part of the complete timing belt/water pump job, if your having the belt done, this would be a good time to have the cam chain tensioner seals replaced.

Cam tensioner gaskets are tricky. You can change them without having to remove the tensioner but requires some major patience. A special tool is required (tool #3366) to compress the tensioner. Afterwards it can be lifted an inch or so and expose the seals without removing the camshafts. In the 2.8 the passenger side is OK, the real bitch is the driver side because of the inner timing belt cover. Bc of it, the tensioner can only go up a tiny bit and it will take all of ur patience to get to the seal.

If you are doing your t. belt, then like the other poster said, you can have it easier and remove the cams. However removing the cams is always a gamble. Cams are picky and if you don't know what u're doing you'll mess up in a second.
