It's sort of hard to diagnose sounds over the internet. Is your check engine light on?

Nothing like valve rap to brighten up ones day. It sounds like maybe you need a valve job, I wouldn't know how much it would cost, I'm new to audis and the last vehicle I drove was a chevy with the almost indestructible 350 v8.

The valves themselves should not be an issue unless they were damaged from a broken timing belt. If it sounds like the noise comes from the rear of the engine mostly then it's probably your cam chain tensioner, or you have sludge restricting oil from reaching the top of your engine.

If you are running stock just get the plastic one... If you are chipped or runnin k04 or better get the forge. Up to you though both work and not that expensive either way. Also, you don't need to wait for an online order if you get the stock dv locally

That's not the diverter valve. That's the combination valve (#18 in the pic), which is primarily for cold engine starts.

The diverter valve shouldn't make a chattering noise and if it was it would be located near the passenger headlight.
