What is it with B5s and wheel bearings?
I'm trying to replace the rear driver's side wheel bearing, and I've run into some difficulty with the camber alignment bolt. How the hell do you get that thing out? We've gotten the whole hub out except for that one bolt. We've sprayed tons of WD40 on it, tried hitting it with a mallet, and a puller won't work because there's no good surface to grip. I read a decent DIY here:http://audiworld.com/tech/wheel45.shtml but it doesn't say anything about difficulty with this. The shop manual likewise just says "remove bolt," very helpful. Has anyone else had trouble with the camber alignment bolt? I know that just about any B5 owner has had to do a wheel bearing at some point, so there's got to be plenty of info around here. Thanks.
you need to put the top part of the spindle back on so it takes some of the weight off. then put a socket on the bolt head and turn it a few times. put the old nut back on just enough so it lines up with the end of the bolt, then hammer the mother out of it. i know it's pretty tight lol ; )
Mine loosened up pretty easily. I did make sure to mark the cam & A arm before removing it, so I could line it back up again. I also used some advise from another thread about unplugging the ABS sensor from under the passenger seat instead of trying to remove it from the hub. A word of caution from somebody that did this (me...lol) double check which way you are pressing the new bearing in, the inner race diameters are differnt.
