What's the best 1.8T engine?
Where exactly are you getting the info from? I'm just curious because it's so damn odd that it would be like that, not doubting you or anything. My copy of ETKA says AHA started during a split in the '98 model year and ATQ started in 2000, which is what I always believed. I'm glad we could at least agree about the semantics of the whole DBW '99.5 situation though.

I have access to "accessaudi" and "servicenet" and "Elsaweb" and many other places
and iim digging deeper and one database tells me one thing and now a different one is telling me something else, so i dig deeper and when i go into vin specific search on b5 a4's
its giving me only AEB and AFC for 96/97
and 98/99 its giving me AEB/ AHA/ ATQ
but when i search for that info in a different database via accessaudi i get different answer..
soo.. BOOM mind blown.. im going to have to do more research and figure out what the actual Fu<& is going on..
Rare to the point that I bet there isn't a single one in this country that came from the factory that way. lol
My A4 has always had a ATW block which it came with from the factory, in 2003 the damaged ATW head was replaced with a built AEB head and later on I swapped on a AWM valve cover. Have a one off intake manifold that has a VR6 throttle body. My car represents all of the years of the B5 A4 1.8t. lol

I think ETKA would be the most accurate source, I've used ELSA and it really generalizes everything so it's practically useless for specific things like this. The problem is these cars aren't exactly new, all official information has been ported and transferred between different databases and software suites since they were created so there are bound to be inconsistencies and omissions.
@Mad COw... so according to you my car is DBC... if i were to swap it to the AEB which is a DBC according to CCA4 ... does that mean i have to get the gas pedal out of the 1.8T also? or just the cable? becuase im pretty sure the cables are different lengths right?
You'll definitely need the cable, but the gas pedal and everything is the same. It'll be more or less of a direct swap, the only thing I can remember having to do custom is extending the fuel lines and rigging up the mess of vacuum lines around the IM. There might be some wiring differences between AFC and AEB though, I never really looked into it because it didn't apply to my swap, if there are differences they'll likely be tiny.
Do you have wiring diagrams?

I have never seen a 99.5 without AEB and DBC. I was always under the assumption that DBW did not start until 2000 for any b5. The 2.8 was advertised as the "superior" model at the time so I'm very interested.
OP could you post up pictures of your throttle body and pedal? That will help clear up a lot.

sorry for the late reply guys ive been busy at work and sh*t... anyways i further inspected my car on the weekend... i just did my valve cover gaskets and that stupid little camshaft cap thing on the back of the cylinder head... i might post up a DIY or something idk... but yea i took a mirror and put it under the throttle body and yes there is a cable so yea my car is a DBC... i want to run a boosted motor for once in my life thats why i want the swap and also the 1.8T has wayyy more aftermarket support than the 2.8 ... i looked up prices for the 1.8 engine and they're all like.. $1500 + ... and when i get the 1.8 i want to rebuild the motor so its freash... but i looked for 1.8t A4's on craigslist and seen 1.8T A4's for like $1600 with a bad tranny (automatic of course) and if i buy that i'll have a complete car for a swap... but right now my concern is whats the best year of the AEB to swap over? im hearing people say 99.5 but i just wanna be absolutely sure before i start throwng $$$$$ out of my wallet.. thanks
