Default What's this frankenstein car worth? S4 Conversion on A4

Looking at a 98 A4 2.8 with 164K on the chassis and 78K on a newer motor and New Clutch. The body is in decent condition, a few scratches but no rust on the body that can be seen. It has S4 bumpers, dash and cluster, heater seats. Bumper has a crack and there are a few knicks on the back, relatively minor for the age.

What is this car worth? I dont want to discount the work that's been put into the car but also dont want to come off insulting if I offer him 2000-3000 either. The body looks clean from what I've seen, I guess 2nd grinds a bit and he usually avoids it. Any scheduled maintenance coming up that I should be aware of? I searched and noticed the timing belt and tensioners, anything else?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Does he have paper work showing the motor swap not just his word? Why the motor swap? IMHO depending on what maintenance has been done I wouldn't go much over 2k...

Water pump and timing belt should be done by 80k miles on the new engine, if this hasn't been done yet it's going to cost some bucks. If it was done, make sure he has records of it!

^^I was thinking the same thing. It sounds like he has receipts for the work but I guess I will have to look through everything well. He did not mention the service so I doubt that has been done.

I'm thinking the car is worth about 2200 if it runs and drives well. I am just expecting a little bit more of a project here. I will search for this information but how much, in parts, is your oe timing belt and water pump set-up? Anything else replaced at this interval?

Thanks for your replies.

Timing Belt and water pump kits can range from $200-$300 depending on 12v or 30v which ever he put in. If you don't plan on doing expect to pay some $$$ all quotes I had for mine were in the $800-$1,000 (1.8t) range and that was at local places! With that mileage on the rest of the car I could be checking all suspension ctrl arms, tre, ect... Also if he can't tell you whats been done than assume it hasn't been. Is this the 1st one you've looked at?! I mean also with the tranny issue probably means the syncros are bad which in the long run means a new tranny, I would consider to keep looking JM2C you can do what you want, if you want a project this will be it!

Thanks for the timing belt info, actually quite a bit cheaper than the last one I did (parts, not quote) but obviously there's some labor involved. I would plan on the tranny and figured the price would reflect that. He said it was a $600 fix but I might just swap it out as I could likely get a transmission in decent shape for around the same amount.
