Default Worth the money?

I was looking at a 98 a4, but it needs a new engine. They want $2000 for the car, but I saw the exact same car with an engine for $3150. I have no clue how much an engine is, but I talked to firestone and they said labor is around $550. Would it be worth it? It would be a newer engine and everything but it might be better to just buy the one with the good engine in it. Feedback?

$2k for a car with a blown motor is crazy. I'd be hard pressed to pay half that

Yeah, definitely not worth it, especially if you don't do the work yourself. And even if you can do the work, you need to already have the tools, be able to loan them for free/cheap, or have other uses for them if you do buy them. If this would be the only engine swap you'd be doing then having to buy a cherry picker and engine stand would not make it worth it.

I just did a quick search on Auto trader and found a whole bunch of nice used A4's from the 1997-2001 model year that may be purchased for between $2500-4000. I'd give them a shot, first.

I'm not sure I'd trust a shop that tells you they'll charge $550 to swap an engine. And Firestone would definitely not be the place I'd have that kind of work done.

Hey thanks a lot guys.

Devil- $550 for labor only. They weren't sure about how much a motor would cost, but now that I see this, I'm glad I didn't go for it. Thank God for Audi Forums

I think what ImTheDevil was driving at is that Firestone is probably not the place to find experienced Audi mechanics. My guess is that someone working at Firestone as a mechanic is fresh from mechanic school, or doesn't have a lot of experience built up yet. No knock on them, though. Everyone starts out somewhere. But taking an old Audi to Firestone for an engine replacement doesn't seem like a recipe for success to me...to put it mildly.
