Default 2002 B6 sounds like a wind up toy

I have been having an issue lately with my 2002 A4 3.0. It sounds like a wind up toy when the engine revs. Drives fine, just sounds funny. Any thoughts on what it might be? Thinking maybe tensioners, but not sure.

Not sure what you mean my wind up toy, but I think a bad tensioner would emit a high pitched squeal.

Could just be your cooling fans. Or a Secondary Air Injection pump. When these start to go bad they produce a whining sound.

Yea it is a squeal that gets louder when the RPM's go up. Would cooling fans or tensioners do that?

I think cooling fans have a set speed. Sounds that increase with engine revs are moving parts connected to the engine. Think serpentine belt, P/S pump, A/C pump, or tensioners in the timing belt. I would have someone rev the engine slowly while you try and listen/pinpoint from the engine compartment. Keep car in park.

Does it happen only while the car is moving, or does it also happen when it is in park/neutral. That separates drive train noise from engine noise.
