2003 A4 1.8T, Flashing PRND, Car Jerks When Accelerating
HI guys. I've been reading up on my problem on these forums.
My car, 2003 A4 1.8T. Over 100K miles.
The car has always acted a little weird when accelerating like it jolts a little when switching gears. Also, when I put the car into cruise control at around 30 to 50 mph... the car will constantly rev up a little from 1.7 on the RPMs to around 2 RPMs. But after you get past 55 Mph there's no issue with that. Also, occassionally when going down a hill the RPMs will go really nuts and rev up to like 4 thousand.
The check engine light came on recently and then went off. Then it came on again and the PRND started flashing, but then the check engine light turned off and the PRND remains flashing when I start the car. I don't have any problems (yet) putting the car in reverse like some of the threads I've read on these forums.
I went to get the code cheaply read at Autozone. It says P0722, Output speed sensor circuit no signal.
From what I've read online people are saying the Transmission Control Module is damaged and must be replaced, which is a $2,000 + job. Is this true? Can I buy one used? Can it be replaced myself? Or does my problem sound like something else? Thanks for the help.

I had the flashing lights on my dash light up on my 2004 A4 1.8T. Which has the CVT transmission. The cost was $1,800 US and the mechanic had to take the TCM out of the transmision. The dealership will probably charge more of course. Replace it with a new one and also program it with the current codes. If I new this happened to the CVT models I would have not bought one. But since I got mine replaced the car has been fine since. (knock on wood) Changing this out by yourself can be done. But, programming the new TCM might be another obstacle. I can try and post up my invoice if, you want to see what was exactly replaced. Just let me know. Good luck with your fix.
Thanks, would love to see the invoice.
My problem is that I put some money into this car already and now its turning out to be a real lemon. I just replaced belts and the turbo and cat... and now the transmission is going.
I am highly considering trading it in while the check engine light is off and the PRND has stopped flashing.
My biggest concern is that if I spend the $2,000 to get the TCM fixed, then the dealer or transmission specialist will also discover in the process that the entire transmission is damaged and will need to be replaced.
The car has always shifted somewhat hard for 30,000 miles. Perhaps it is my fault for not getting it worked on sooner since I always suspected there is a problem. But I had never gotten a check engine light.
Do you all think this is worth fixing? Or just rid myself of a car I put a lot of money into? If I fix it... who knows, perhaps the RPM problem goes away but the car still shifts hard because the transmission is damaged. I just don't know.
