ur alarm will still work. But the chirp wont. As far as i know u cannot disable to alarm. if i were you i would unplug the battery wait and plug it back in and see if the lights turn off after u put in the new alarm chirp unit.

Further progress
I bought a VAG diagnostic cable and ran a test on the convenience module. Alarm is being set off by the hood sensor!! Car does not indicate that the hood is open but alarm was still going off. Had a good look at the cable and it had lost its insulation and the conductors were visible. Fiddling, the one wire broke. I have now left it "open" and so far no alarm. But I don't know categorically if the switch has the hood shut when it is "open" (wires apart) or "closed" (wires joined). Any insight valuable. I will not be replacing the switch. I can see if the hood is closed, I don't need a switch to tell me, keep me awake, keep my neighbors awake, have me constantly charging the battery, costing me money for diagnostics, etc . I don't need the alarm - I don't care if it gets stolen. It becomes someone else's problem
