3.0 - immediate stalling on start up

Was it this one, by chance?

That's what I pulled off my wife's Avant using VAG-COM. Come to think of it, we were trying to get her second fob to work with the car around this time, too. Maybe this was the root cause of our problem, too.

Default Same/similar issue with 2003 A4 1.8T Avant

The car always starts - but on the 3rd try. I replaced the gas cap and bought a new valve but have not replaced the valve yet. The issue exists with the two main keys and the plastic key. If immobilizer, could need the cluster changed out. Have had it looked at and don't want to trial and error to thousands of dollars. Again, it always starts - eventually (try 1 - RPM up to 1500, drops, try 2 - RPM up to 1500, drops, try 3 - RPM up and settles at about 1000 or so).
