Default Advice On High Milage 2002 A4 Purchase

I'm not very familiar with Audi's so I figured out that this is a good place to ask questions. I'm looking to buy a 2002 Audi A4 1.8 Turbo Quattro Sedan with 95,000 miles on it. I know that Audi parts are quite expensive. I was wondering what the normal engine and transmisson life are. What kind of problems can I expect to encounter with this vehicle. Thanks in advance for your responses.

I'm in the same boat, except that I actually went through with the purchase. Was 2 days ago now, so far so good. Only issue I had was a code on the ODBII that needed to be flushed to pass inspection. Code was flushed and didn't come back after 200 miles of driving and about 30 minutes of idling and taxing the engine per Audi generic safety test specs. Going to replace spark plugs and coils asap just in case I guess...

On a side note: A know a few people with A4s in my office with over 150k miles and still running fine... the majority of problems I hear are electrical. This is just a noobie talking to you tho, lets hear what the experienced A4 drivers have to say

Edit: Code was 'Random misfiring detected'

Stasy up on just regular maitenance, use only synthectic oil 3-5k and treat it well and the car will last 150-200K miles no problem. Of course there will be timing belt, water pump, clutch etc but that is with any car. Audi's were built to last

Things that tend to go for the B6s are the MAF sensor, coil packs, and window regulators. I just had my MAF sensor replaced recently at around 60K miles.

Changing the timing belt/tensioner/water pump is very important. You have a car with a zero clearance head. If you break your timing belt you will bend valves and trash pistons. If the car has high miles make sure that the service was already done. If not, figure for $1k for the service and make certain that this is negotiated in the selling price because it WILL have to be done. Audi originally recommended it at 105k miles, but any reputable mechanic who knows these cars and even Audi has now revised that to 90k intervals. Be wary!

I too just bought my first Audi:

2002 A4 Quattro 1.8t.
I am the 3rd owner and it has 109k miles.
The first owner (45 year old woman) drove it nearly 600 miles on a weekly basis.
She also purchased a 100k mile warranty and kept immaculate maint/gas records (i.e. every fuel up she recorded what she put in and what it cost.)
She sold it at 90k miles and the 2nd owners did the same as they were co-workers of the first owner.

Mine just had new tires, brakes, calipers, radiator, coils, and a hose replaced.
I anticipated needing to replace the timing belt & waterpump and will do so this weekend.
I just couldn't pass up a $7k price. So, I say get it.
