I put midgrade 89 in it, never regular. You can tell the difference IMO. I should go back to 93 or 91 and see what my gas mileage does.

also, im no math expert but here are some quick estimates for your viewing pleasure :
93 for me is 20-25cents more, lets say 25cents
i get 4 tanks a month
my car holds 15 gallons
.25 x 15 gallons x 4 tanks = WOW a whole $15 a month more to put the correct fuel that some audi engineer designedthe engine to run on...
BTW one double Jager with red bull cost me $15 last weekend at da club
and as some others have kindly pointed out, most of us see better mileage with the premium than with 87

why half *** it? you are paying 10c extra for 2 octane, might as well pay 20c extra and get 6 octane

Perhaps I will try the super and see what happens.

RE: can i put in regular 87 gas in my a4?
87 octane does not clog injectors. Where do people get this stuff? The only difference between regular and premium is the octane rating. The lower octane does not resist detonation as much as the premium. The difference it makes to the car is that the timing will retard accordingly and the engine will not create as much power as it would if you filled the tank with premium. If you are concerned about dirty injectors then run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through the car every 2000 miles or so.

RE: can i put in regular 87 gas in my a4?
Only one time I put regular gas in (I was at work and I noticed I didn't have fuel so I put 5 gallons we used for maintainance tools, mowers and such. I averaged 3.9 less (even on a straight road cruising at 55mph) but for sake of arguement I'll say 2mpg's lower than when I'd put 93 in.
Here's a new mathematical explanation:
Lets say you average 24 mpg's on premium. You have "15" gallons in your tank that you'll use in 1 week (I think its 14.3 or something but for easier math I'm goin with 15 also)
Premium: 24x15=360x4=1440ø miles/month
Regular: 22x15=330x4=1320ø miles/month
1440-1320=120/22=5.45x$4.25=$23.16
Now to compensate the 120 miles that you didn't get by using regular you're spending about $23.16 extra per month! (giving that premiumis 4.50 and regular is 4.25) Fuel economy may not be entirely noticable but in the long run it affects you.

Egh... that was just an example of what most ppl get. Besides, that is an
average of both city and highway not just cruising which is right about normal. But yes it seems like all my cars get **** poor gas milage even when I drive like a grandpa. My 2 altima's and my 2.7 also. My truck gets 28.4mpg ø so that's the best I've ever gotten. [&o]

nice math! it only makes sense to run premium if your car says too...

Since I'm new here and new to the B6, I have to ask... do your upgraded chips keep the timing adjustment intact when it detects detonation? I haven't seen a solid answer on how much of a boost increase most of the Stage 1 chips allow, but I'd be pretty hesitant to run anything lower than 91 on increased boost.
Then again, I'm basing this off my experience with my TTZ, so it's hard to judge.
Don't mind the random questions / comments either - I'm reading up so I can be a rather informed B6 owner come this fall.
