If you're stock, 87 octane won't affect the engine in any way shape or form, you're not driving a corvette. The compression ratio is fairly low and boost for that matter as long as your stock. 3.0L's definately don't need premium.
The germans always list the cars as "required" premium fuel because they don't wanna hear customers complain about lack of power in thier cars.

actually no it wont but on a long run it could depending on the lead foot ( the fuel octane level is designed for power ) and a stock car only has so much so don't waste you money and save it for the track " octane counts there "

His 87 is most likely equal to California 87 octane, so are you telling everyone in CA that they shouldn't be running 91?
Audi recommends 91 octane so it will cover the 91 octane being sold in CA.
People at high elevations dont need to run 91 octane either and most of the times they wont even see 91 at their pumps.
That can even be 25-30 cents different in some areas.
