car heat question
Well I didn't have time so I took it to my mechanic who has worked on his fair share of Audi's and he called me about 30 mins later and he got it putting out some mega heat. He said there was still a air bubble and he bled the system and that's all it took. I guess I fail at being a mechanic and should take it places to get worked on. He was telling me how he's changed a few heater cores in these cars and he talked about how much of a b**** it is. I asked him what he'd charge if that was what it was and he said $350 so he's definitely cheaper than a dealership and he knows his ****. I'm a happy man about right now
Well now I have a coolant smell inside my car but its not wet by or around the heater core. I'm back to having cool air at idle so its sounding more and more like thats the issue. I'm going to have someone look at it but I'm also pricing out heater cores now and where is the best place to buy one? I just did a google search and this site poped up, PartsTrain.com - Hard to Find Auto Parts and Truck Parts -
Where would you buy yours at?

sigh back to the questions again :/

We have a core in stock 8E1-820-031 which should work for the B6 cars no matter the engine, for 135.00 plus 10-15 dollars shipping to most places. Here's my opinion on heater cores.
My 94 Toyota needed one just 4 months ago. I put in the chinese made 95.00 core that I bought from Macs radiator. This was the same price as the rockauto or autopartswarehouse online shops. What I got was a decent core that was all metal and the fins were spaced about as far apart as an engine radiator fins would be. It was a little under one inch in thickness, the tanks above and below it were wider than the core was.
The OEM core was about 360.00 and the core was as wide as the tanks above and below and the fins were spaced much closer together.
When I got the job done it I wasn't as impressed with how much heat I got from the aftermarket core compared to what I used to get with the OEM core. It now takes about 4-5 minutes to get as hot as it used to get before I changed out the core. And I even added sticky back foam to take up space inside the box between the core and heater box so the air wouldn't have any place else to go but through the core.
In my case, given the price difference I still might go with the less expensive core. But if the difference would have only been 50.00 or so I'd have gone OEM and almost wish I did now but only on really cold days which we don't get in Oregon as much as some other more Northern States can get.
I encourage the use of OEM parts, be it Toyota, Audi or other brands. Forum members don't need to be told what to buy. Experience and the type of part needed will dictate that most of the time. I usually don't throw my opinion out there but in this case I have a dog in this fight with aftermarket cores and wanted to share my experience.
