Default Catalytic Converters

My wife drives a 2003 A4 with about 90,000 miles -- engine light came on -- she took it to the local gas station and was told that her two catalytic converters were shot and need replacement -- she had them do it -- cost was $2,700 -- I think I got taken -- any suggestions? -- are there really two converters? -- do they often need replacement? -- HELP!!

What the previous poster stated. I got mine taken care of at a dealership. You might want to see if there is anything the dealership can do for you.
