considering 02 3.0 A4 purchase- 6spd tranny problems
A friend of mine wants to get rid of her 02 A4 3.0L 6spd quattro.
85k
recent timing belt and water pump
new tires/brakes
sounds like window regulator problem.
cracked windsheild
bad 1st gear.
She's driving it now, stating in 2nd.
Other than that, the car is in great shape.
She said she'd sell it to me for $4k. What am I in for on the tranny? What else should I look out for?
Thanks.

Then I'll think you'd be alright to get the car, as long as you're aware that fixing the 1st gear won't be cheap, I don't know how much but not cheap; I don't think is a DIY unless you're a mechanic with your own shop and equipment. The Windshield you can get that repaired or live with it, depends on your state laws and the window regulator check on the top of this forum for the WINDOW REGULATOR DIY thread, you'll find the info that you need to repair it there.
Yeah, I wouldn't even consider the tranny rebuild, maybe the remove and re-intall, depends on how much work and special tools.
I'm assuming that the best thing to do is just swap out the tranny instead of trying to have it rebuilt. Anyone got any estimates of cost on this? is the R+R something a decent shade tree mech could do?

To own an Audi you have to have deep pockets unless you can do the work yourself. But l would go with the 1.8T if l had to do it all over again.
With 85k miles you are going to cringe every time you hear a weird noise.
If you want to save $$ pay a little more and go with a 1.8T
That's my opinion

Is first gear broken or is it just a bad synchro. Since she's a friend, it would be worth taking it to a local tranny shop and asking for a quote for a complete rebuild vs replacing the synchros. Let me know, since my daughter's car is a 2003 A4 3.0l MT6. It shifts like a dream with 77k on the odo.
