Default Fuel filler cap error light

Hi everyone -

Sorry, I'm something of a n00b to this forum, just recently purchased a pre-owned '04 A4 1.8T Quattro.

I tried searching the forums, but couldn't find a solution to this dilemma. I noticed during the test drive that for a few seconds after starting the car, and after opening/closing any door, the indicator shows up in the information center that the gas cap isn't on. The dealer had a brand new gas cap sent up from their Audi sister-dealership, who told them the error should go away with that, maybe not immediately, but soon after replacing the gas cap.

Now, three days later, the error still comes up whenever I start the car or open a door. I'm able to dismiss it by using the up/down/reset buttons for the trip computer, but it still comes back the next time. It's not so much of a problem, just an annoyance.

I know that the cap is on tight, two or three clicks worth of tight, but I can't get it to go away! Anyone had this problem, or know how to remedy it? Please?

- Brad

It took 2 weeks for my fuel guage to start working after a dead battery, take it to the dealership about every 2 days. I'd threaten the "I can return this car within 72 hours of purchasing it" law if your state has it, if its not too late already, and the fact they said it would be fixed with that part.

Audi's somehow heal, the ECU is smart, but this doesn't sound like something that would heal. This sounds like something that will cost $$$. I wish you the best of luck!

That warning is the fuel door warning, not the cap. The cap would throw a CEL.

Fortunately, the dealer made a note of the error, and told me to come back if it didn't go away. So, hopefully, they'll be true to their word and fix it when I go back. Unfortunately, I'm leaving town tomorrow to go back to school and will be 3.5 hours away from that dealership.

So would you think this was just a sensor somewhere that's not detecting that door as being closed (it still successfully locks with the central locking) or a deeper-rooted problem than that?
