Exclamation Heating and Thermostat- am I getting screwed?

SO I was driving my car the other day and it started to over heat. The motor seemed like it was cool. Not risk any further damage I took the car to a shop to get fixed. I get there and they tell my thermostat is bad. Told me it will be $250 to replace. I get a call from them 2 hours later telling me I have to buy the whole housing because the thermostat was melted.

Fast forward to today and I go to get the car and they say the thermostat is still not opening. They tell me that the ECU may have to be changed because the sensor is not opening the thermostat. I told him it was a mechanical piece and not electronic.

Now they are trying to figure it out and have no idea why the thermostat would not open.

Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Update:
Just got a call and they say the thermostat is working fine; car is still overheating though. Maybe a water pump?

What are the details of your car? Year, mileage, etc. I have an 02 and the thermostat is electronic, as are the 03s and others i believe. Oh, and the thermostat is all one piece, you have to replace the housing at the same time. The water pump is not easy to replace.

The temp sensor is a common thing to have to replace.

The car is an Audi A4 1.8T FWD 02 with 92K on it.

The place just told me that they are returning the car back to me and not going to charge me cause they couldn't fix it.

I'm guessing now it has to be the water pump? I suppose I should do the belts, bearings and tensioner as well right?

You should do the timing belt and the water pump anyway bc you are right around the mileage to have that done. Buy a kit from ecstuning.com it will include the water pump and tensioner.
