How do i tension my timing belt? B6
Hey i have a quick question about how you set the tensioner for the timing belt. I know i have to put in the 8mm hex socket and turn clockwise but for what? so i can get the spacing between the pulley and the tensioner correct? But why? the only thing i know that i have to do for sure is move the pointed arrow on the pulley to the 4-5 o'clock. Than after that i tighten down the 13mm bolt. Then what?

Here is a picture of my old tensioner. I only had about 4mm spacing gapping and i dont want to go with the picture

I also had a quick question how do you know if you hit the valves or not? When i hand crank the engine clockwise after removing the 4 hex bolts from the damper pulley, it was pretty hard to crank it. Some parts it felt smooth and some parts felt heavy. But the thing is i didnt hear any noises while getting the timing at TDC. So im hoping i didnt damage anything.
Here is another thread that i saw but it still wasnt helpful.

This will allow you to push the pulley to the right. You can use a specific VAG tool to tension the crazy tensioner pin to get the space between the 2 arrows is between 6-10mm (I threw a 7mm Allen key in between the tensioners to get proper spacing) or you can do what I did and use a crescent wrench to turn it.

Just some ramdom pictures of installing the timing belt.
Here is a picture of the old timing belt. As you can see the pulley isnt even tension correctly. It only had about 4mm spacing

Everything was aligned correctly by the last person who installed the tb

New Water pump installed the old one had the plastic fins and the new one from ECS tuning came with the metal fins.

Back to the tensioning part. Im 50% sure this is how you do it.
1.Insert 8mm Hex Key and turn clockwise
2.Stick in 6-7mm allen key in between the pulley and the tensioner
3.Release the hex key but leave in the 6-7mm allen key
4. turn the pointed point on the pulley counter clockwise to 4-5 o'clock area.
5.Tighten the 13mm bolt.
6.Then release the 6-7mm allen key
7. Pull the Pin or the plate that is holding down the pin in the tensioner.
Thats it correct? i dont need any special tension tool or the crescent wrench.
Can someone please correct me if im wornt?
Thanks alot.
