I'm conceding, you win, the CVT is crap.
Well after much time invested in repairing and maintaining, much money invested in special tools and diagnostic equipment and much effort in staying ahead of the recommended service intervals, my CVT is on its way out at 70,012 miles. It developed a faint whirring sound around 60k miles. So faint it was inaudible most days. Thinking it was most likely uneven tread wear I brushed it off. At 66,968 I changed the CVT fluid according to procedures in the Bentley Repair Manual #AB66. at 69,359 miles I noticed (and noted) that this whirring sound is definitely not uneven tread wear. I was hoping it was the turbo but diagnosis has proved its the transmission. Rebuilding the transmission is possibly out of my league (never rebuilt a tranny before) and the $6700-$8000 Ive been quoted is way more than I can afford. I'm screwed. All my high-hopes about preventative maintence reigning over the little demon trolls that inhabit the CVT are dashed. Taking it to the dealer on Tuesday to see what they have to say. Lemme guess, a new transmission?Anyone need some parts? I hate my life....
On a side note, when I called audiusa to explain my issue, the customer service representative asked, "why did you change the fluid sir? That fluid is filled for life from the factory." I replied, "excuse me? According to your own Service Manual it states it should be changed at 40,000 mile intervals and I've spoke to audi-techs who say that often by 40,000 miles its already too late, anyone who knows the CVT knows that, I'm surprised that I'm the one telling you this." She says, "well sir you're going to have to take it to a dealer, they may have to disassemble the transmission to determine the problem and you may be responsible for the costs associated with that..." I can't believe, after all the failures these tranny's are known for having, Audi still wants to pretend like the design isn't flawed. I've done everything I could to preserve the CVT for as long as it would last. I have an appointment this week with an Audi Dealership, Same place that quoted me $880.00 to do the CVT fluid change. I have a feeling there is going to be alot of side-stepping and dancing around the real issue with the transmission, that it is inherently destined for premature failure.

What else would you expect after the timing belt fiasco, and their refusal to pay even after class action?! I like the cars a lot, but they break too much, and the problems are common. I'm surprised that in the 3 years I've had mine there has only been one recall, and that on the crankcase breather hose. IMO all of the surfaces covered in soft touch should be recalled, along with the check valves, the timing belt, and motor mounts, as well as many other things that always break before 100k miles.
Anyone who owns an Audi and has a complaint with it should call 1-888-AFS-AUDI. Thats audiusa's phone number, they're taking a survey's on customer satisfaction after the call, take it. or you can link here http://www.audiusa.com/audi/us/en2/f..._relations.htx post your comments and they will send you an e-mail survey they are only surveying for a limited time so if you want to be heard now's a good time.
