just replaced transfer case output/prop seal
04 B6 automatic with 105k miles. it has been leaking slowly gear oil for a year or so from transfer case rear, and when I fill it with gear oil (using cheap pump which screws to the gear oil bottle and leaks), it doesn't take too much to top it off. But, what a friggin mess.
So I broke down and bought an official audi seal (40 bucks - I know, could have gotten it cheaper mail order, but I was on a time schedule to take car out of service). I did the job on ramps, and I'm now a yoga expert. The exhaust wasn't in the way (much) and I was just lucky to get all the bolts broken loose. That mechanism at the output is considered a CV joint (and has the nasty grease to prove it) but what the heck is it, as it sure ain't a CV like on the half shafts. Can't figure out why there is grease in there. Any way, pumped in Mobil 1 GL5 and hope it holds. Questions for experts - when you push a screw with blue locktight on it through grease, does it still work as expected?
Cheers
