Default k04 turbo upgrade, worth it?

so i've got an 04 1.8t quattro(lovin it), with about 100k miles on it, and have been considering upping performance a bit. from what i've read and seen, the turbo upgrade gives a pretty significant increase in gains.

so my question is the k04 turbo upgrade worth it, and will my engine be able to handle the strain of the extra power? is there anything i can do to prevent it anddo i absolutely need to chip it?

any advice would be awesome!

You can put a k04 on with nothing else changed and use it. It'll be transparent. If you get supporting mods (DV, intercooler, chip) you'll make probably 30hp more than you would with a k03 and those mods. If you are going to upgrade the turbo, do it right with a GT series or a 2871r elim setup. Then you'll see real gains.

Yeah, my thought is that if my stock K03 ever bites it, a K04 is only slightly more expensive, so it'll be a "might as well" kind of upgrade, but if I'm ever *really* on a mission for more power, I'll go bigger.

I am in the same boat. My K03 bit the dust and I am looking to do the K04. My issue is I do not have the funds right now for the chip, fmic, DV etc etc so I plan to just slap a K04 turbo on it and add the others as I get the funds..

I wouldnt upgrade to a FMIC or the larger turbo unless you have lighter flywheel personally. Youre just going to have increased turbo lag and you are going to hate that even more. Upgrade your hoses, chip and exhaust first, then replace the flywheel and have at the turbo and FMIC upgrade after. Im still running my k03 and love the quick spool. And my stage 1 APR chip is putting down 19 psi at peak, and trimming off at about 16 psi, and I love the get up and go. Just dont slap a bigger turbo on without doing your research on the other goodies.

yea I just replaced the flywheel recently actually, but I guess my thing is that I don't want to put too much strain on the engine and have other **** breaking as a sacrifice for hp and end up spending more on repairs than mods, you kno? and i don't want to always have to take it easy on the engine and not push it, it kind of defeats the purpose

at any rate does apr's chip software raise any illegality or lead to my engine getting degraded, at least more quickly?
