maintenance periods
Hey guys,
I own a 04' B6 1.8T which is basically a weekend car (6700mi.). I was wondering how often should the oil be changed and service intervals done. I drive the car 2-3 miles every week (to get the engine up to operating temps.). Is there anything else I should be doing to keep the car up to snuf? I would hate to have some kind of problem (sludge) later on down the road.

I own a '04 B6 1.8Tq 6sp. Avant, and while Audi recommends oil changes every 10K miles, you're better off doing them at every 5K, as well as using synthetic with each change. However, in your case, it doesn't sound like you're driving the car that much, so you could probably get away with the changes at 10K. After extended periods of driving, be sure to wait a couple of minutes at idle before turning the car off (this allows the turbo to cool down). With regard to the sludge issue in the 1.8T engines, as long as you have a documented service history, you can prove to Audi that there wasn't neglect in your case of the car. Audi now warranties the 1.8T engines from beginning of service to 8 years with unlimited mileage against the sludge issue.
Yeah, I don't drive the car that often. I was wondering time wise opposed to milage. I have changed out the oil three timesalready within the 31/2 yrs. of owning it (both times using Mobile one synthetic). I was just wondering if anyone would have a good reccommendation towards how long I should wait till the oil would need to be changed (way before the milage reccommendation).
What do all of you think of a turbo timer? Aren't there some that take into how long and hard you were driving your car. They then let the car idle accordingly. Wasn't there an issue with the stock alarm and turbo timers?

I one turbo car with 180,000 miles on the original turbo and I don't have a turbo timer. It is only a problem if you are a hot rodder or perhapsstop at the top of a long hill. The key is synthetic oil, it doesn't burn in the turbo. Just idle the engine for a moment or two if you have used the turbo in the last few minutes, i.e. fast acceleration up the driveway andinto the garage. I have never needed to idle my cars to cool the turbos.
PS: Drive that car some more.

It's actually my wife's car. She fell in love with it when she saw it. It's definatly a girl's car. Cabrio in the sea mist blue color. We only drive it on weekends or when we go for longer drive to the other side of the island. It rains a lot on Kauai, and I just hate getting the car and top dirty with red dirt.
