Default MIl is on but the car has no issues Code P0722 Only

Hi everyone,

I searched this and couple of other forums, and I am not sure I know what is going on. I have a 2005 A4 Convertible 1.8T. Couple of weeks ago the MIL came on and was off after a day. Then after a while it came back on and stayed mostly on. I checked the code and it was code P0722. That was the only code and it was recorded twice. I know that this car has couple of speed sensors, but what I found out was that people mostly think TMC when the error shows up. The problem is that this is the only error I have. I do not have 706 or or any other errors indicative of TMC. Also the car has no issues driving.
So what my question is what could I check before I have to replace the TMC. Someone mentioned to check VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor), ABS sensor before the TMC. The ABS as I understand is fairly easy to access (behind the driver side front wheel), but where do I find the VSS?
Can the TMC be the issue when the car has no problem driving?

Any help is appriciated

If you have vag-com, you can check the output of the sensors. Otherwise, you might need to dig into the Bentley manual...

Ok, I can order the vag com or if there is someone in Los Angeles willing to lease me one for a fair compensation even better. What should I be looking for? Sorry, but my previous cars were Mercedes, so I am still new into all the wonders that make an Audi.

The code indicates that you have a problem with the speed sensor:
http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/VW/Bent..._DTC_Table.pdf

checking the function of the sensor would be the first place to start. With the vag-com, you can track the output of the sensor and compare it to normal behavoir. I dont know exactly where the sensor that is referenced is located but a little searching will change that. If it is accessible, you could check the sensor with a voltmeter, and replace it if necessary.

If you need more help, someone with more knowledge then me might chime in, or I can see what I find in the Bentley manual.

If you can afford the ~$250 for the vag-com, it would be a worthwhile investment IMO.

Smile Same problem here

shmeker, i have the exact same model car and problem just as you described. Did you get it fixed, how? Can anyone assist with locating the Vehicle Speed Sensor? Other that the MIL (P0722) indicater the car is running perfect.

Thanks,

BTW this is my 1st audi and post

If you have the CVT transmission then check my thread here

https://www.audiforums.com/forum/audi-a4-8/mil-code-p0722-please-help%7Eupdated%3B-tcm-need-replaced-60646/

And if yes, then there's not much you can do. The problem is inside the TCM. You can fix it by open it up, and replaced some electrical components. I know a garage in Taiwan can fix it, and some in UK can do trade in exchange fix also.

Mine only shown one p0722 code with MIL steady on, no flashing MIL, no flashing gear indicators, no any problems at all for 3 years.
I drove it for 36000 miles with MIL always on, then I'm forced to change the TCM in order to pass CA smog.

Remember to call AUDI USA if you want to fix it through AUDI dealer, they can offer some assistant for discount if dealer can't do that.

Good Luck!
