New to me A4 and I need some help :)
Good Morning,
Wife fell in love with a 2003 A4 1.8T(red) with 90k miles on it and now it is my job to fix it up. The current biggest concern is that when the engine is hot and you stop for say a fuel refill. Sometimes it will not start while hot, you have to feather the gas while you crank it and then it will start. Starts great and every time when cold or if it sits more then 15ish minutes, and only fails to start 1 out of every 4-5 hot starts.
I take that back it starts comes up to around 1000rpm and then dies. If you feather the gas you can keep it above 1000rpm and then it keeps running no problem.
Any ideas would be great appreciated.
As a follow up I am mechanically inclined and do most work myself, should I just get a Haynes manuel or go all the way and get the Audi service manuel?
Thanks for your help it is truly appreciated!

I am still new to Audi's, but I know on several other vehicles a faulty fuel pressure regulator will cause similar symptoms. Maybe someone else can chime in as to wether our cars have a replaceable pressure regulator and if that could potentially be your issue.

don't forget to have that timing belt (and water pulp/tensioner) replaced if the previous owner did not do so, which is highly likely. It is prone to failure in the mileage range of your car...audi manual says 105,000 miles, but I would do it sooner. Failure is common and very expensive result
It was all changed at 75k (timing belt and water pump and such), I have a new temp sensor to try but have not got around to replacing it yet.
but my starting problem does seem to happen more often at 1/2 tank of fuel or less. Has me starting to think fuel pump or fuel filter. I have a fuel filter on order so maybe that will help.
