Default Power Steering Problem

I lost power steering suddenly and I realized my power steering fluid was low, so I filled it up and two days later I still have no power steering. Any suggestions to what else would be causing this problem? Is it most likely the pump or could it be something else? It is an 02 A4 quattro 1.8t

Thanks for any help

Check our hose.. n try to see if its a leakage.. turn Ur steering wheel all.the way to one side.. see if it leaks.. it should start to smoke somewhere in a running car (if.it hits any warm or hot.spots).. since the heat causes it to evaporate.. u can start with that.. I don't know much but thats what my bro has his problem In his car.. n its not an Audi.. so I'm assuming my two cents

i have a power steering fluid leak somewhere too. i believe it's in the rack, which will be costly for me. fortunately (at least for now) it's not leaking as bad as yours.

if you are not sure what to do i'd bring it in to your mechanic cuz you obviously have a leak

I don't think it is a leak, the level hasn't dropped since I filled it, but the power hasn't come back yet.

I am having a very similar issue with a leak in my power steering. the place I go to get it worked on wanted about 1500 for a new power steering rack + the labor. As far as I've been able to figure out on my own, I should be able to seal it up and be just fine. Any thoughts?

I found a small leak, but luckily it started working today. I guess it just took a little for the fluid to get where it needed to go because the leak made it lose some pressure. I'm glad I got it working. Problem solved

Default power steering

Ok i own a 2004 B6 S4. i have the same problem. my dealership is telling me its the "power take off". i have the same symptoms. i fill the resevior and i don't lose any fluid but no power assist. i was told the pump is good but my gears on the take off have seized which kills the power assist. they also told me it was a 36 hour job LMAO!!!! which translates into a 5k job. not in this lifetime. I've been driving the car with no power steering.luckily no other complications have come because of that but i am not going to tackle this until i have the time to drop the 4.2 to do the job. for me the labor is the killer. hell parts are under a grand. so for you with the 1.8 it may be an easier task to tackle. hope this helps and if anybody out there can help me with "what the hell is the power take off lol and how i can tackle that" would be greatly appreciated.

Your S4 has a shaft driven power steering pump.... There is no such thing as a Power Take Off..... PTO refers to auxilary shaft driven pump to run an hydraulic pump..... most commonly found on dump trucks. So i guess in a wierd way you can say the S4 has a PTO setup but you can't turn it off and on. Its either the pump or the rack, either way its not a pretty job. You don't need to pull the engine to replace either one

And Jmoney........ your going to need a rack. Take a small pick or pin and puncture the bellows boot somewhere on the bottom. If fluid comes out of either side... you need a rack.

The pump will generally be noisy before it starts loosing pressure

Hello audi-tek,

Do you know what the part # is for the low pressure power steering hose? 2004 S4 B6.
Thanks,
Peter Voss
