Default rebuilding engine need advice

Hey guys this is my first thread on this forum, im fairly clueless about audis and basically anything European so I figured i'd try to get some help from you guys. I have an 02 a4 Quattro 1.8t I bought it used fairly cheap at about 80,000 miles and my intentions were to use it as a daily driver until I found another vehicle that I could as my commuter, and then park the audi and make it into the fast nimble street machine that I dreamed about. but at about 94,000 miles the oil pump went out it started making a ticking and shortly after the oil light came on and I pulled over immediately and could hear the oil pump struggling and it wasn't running very well. I didn't drive it long with the oil long but the shop I took it to said the engine is basically toast. I don't want to buy a engine to put in it. I have a car now that I can drive and put my daily miles on, so the audi is in no rush to be fixed. but what I need help with is deciding what exactly I want to do with the engine, what I was thinking before was an upgraded turbo, exhaust, intake, and then chip with tune. but now im thinking I want to dig into the internals and possibly go higher compression pistons, with upgraded valvetrain and then whatever else needs to be replaced. now this is assuming that the head and block are still OK. I havnt gone into the engine myself yet, I work at trophy truck engine shop so I have fairly good experience with engines and I have almost limitless supplies of expertise with my coworkers when it comes to actually building the engine, but I need help from you guys deciding what to do with the internals of the motor. any feedback at all is appreciated
