Rhythmic clicking from rear quarter panel

Rhythmic clicking from rear quarter panel
There is a rhythmic clicking coming from the passenger rear quarter panel.
It is present whether the car is running or not. Sounds almost like someone dropped a clock back there.
I removed the gas cap and had no change. Put the top up and down, (cabriolet) again no change.
Any thoughts while I pull out my vagcom?
Suggestions welcome.
