Rubber/oil smell inside car when A/C is on

No, you aren't taking off the chain from the tensioner, its actually quite hard to get off so there is no worries about timing problems. You do need to compress the tensioner to gain enough access under the tensioner though, and you need to unbolt the tensioner so it comes up off the head a few millimeters.
