Most likely Temp sensor, mine also ended up with CEL.

But 10k later, my thermostat went, and symptoms were - T would go to 1/2 only in stop-and-go, drop to 1/4 on a hwy.

the temp sensor is an easy fix. Located at the rear of the engine being held in by a small plastic pin. http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page...tml&category=5

It sounds like either your lower temp sensor by the radiator drain or your t-stat. Just went through the same thing. I opted to order parts for $150 (both temp sensors & T-stat) and paid $150 for install of all and new coolant fill/flush. There is a DIY for the T-stat and temp sensors, I just did not have the time. Good Luck

is this in the same spot for the 3.0? I just got my new sensor in and I want to change it later this evening, however I could not find it on my 3.0 earlier when I was looking for it. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, and it is tough to get to. Be careful with the plastic clip.
