Default '05 3.2, 45k, multiple questions, plugs etc.

Hey guys, thanks in advance for all the information. I just got a 2005 a4 with the 3.2, I'm in love. I need some general questions answered and hope you'll indulge me:

1. is my car considered the B7?
2. where can I get the updated nav disc? it appears I have the rns-e sys, don't wanna pay 2-300 hundred bucks if there is an alternative..
3. car has 45k miles. idle seems like too much vibration. replacing air filter w purolator, not doing k&n. should I? thoughts on teh k&n?
4. Spark plugs is next re the idle problem. I've read the other threads but they all involve the turbos. Any recommendations on a 100% stock 3.2? and DIY info/photos? I know a little but don't want to create a problem b/c I don't know something i should know I get in there.
5. What else should I do maintenance wise at the 45k point? i don't know what's been done or not previously. fuel filter, cabin air filter...anything? I hate no knowing what's been done, and i want to make sure I do whatever i need to get the maintenance up to par.

sorry for an all over the place thread. spark plugs is the biggest question. bosch, ngk? problems I'll encounter DIYing? thanks in advance for the help guys...

there is a good thread in DIY section of this forum, for spark plug change...I think it's a 2.0T, but should be fairly similar...looks like an easy job and I'm due for a change...

My understanting, if yours is an '05 it likely a B6, but '05.5 i they went to B7 - do you have the big front grille...

Mine is an '06 B7:

I have K&N in mine, and had it in my Jetta before this...never had any problems...I recently cleaned and re-oiled this one...made a noticeable difference.

Can't help you on the nav, mine don't have it.

Can't advise you on the plugs, but check that DIY it have some specs to look at...

All the other preiodic maintenance...did your car come with a manual? It will tell you. I just hit 50k and am about to open it up and see what else I need to do...

Check if your eligible for the coil pack recall, or if it's been done. A dealer service dept can tell you if you give them the VIN.

Check your cam follower - there is a DIY on that too...also fairly easy job...known issue and failure part.

Hope that helps, have a search around, there is plenty of good info to be found here

1. look at second post, if your car looks like that then you have a b7, else b6. 2005/2005.5 had a split.

2. you might be able to find a copy of this floating around, i do not have rns-e, so can't help you there. try torrents? I heard they have them.

3. rough idle is normal, but not excessively rough. Mine from time to time has a rough idle, not much to worry about unless your RPM's are dropping rapidly. K&N makes great filters, go for it!

4. stick with oem, shouldn;t really need to go aftermarket.

5. call dealer to ask what is needed, for the b7 at 50k a service exists. plugs, oil change, filter, air filter, etc. As dealer for a list then do it yourself. I believe manual might have it listed as well.

As for diy, it's pretty straight forward install. Remove screws for the conduct then slide out, then pop up coil packs, remove spark plugs. I suggest sticking with oem, save you the hassle on needed to space them out or whatever you need to do with aftermarket spark plugs.

Default 3.2 capacity info, etc?

thanks for replies. I am looking at ngk pfr7w tg plugs. Anyone used them? also, I got owners manual today, but it only covers 1.8t and 2.0t info. Can anyone point me to the specs for my 3.2? I need oil capacity/type, plug gap, the basics. Thanks again for replies and any help or direction from you 3.2's out there is appreciated. ps doing k&n tomorrow and will let you know how I make out. thanks again dudes...

Navi Disc:
Torrents are dangerous and didn't work for me. I was lucky and got a full disc from the dealer where I bought my car. I'll see if I can image it later, but there was a lot of problems trying to do it. (Something about has to be Dual Layer, burned at low speed, that type of thing)

I ended up wasting 4-5 DL DVDs trying to get a copy I got from a torrent to work.

My suggestion: The Navigation sucks. Ditch the RNS-E and get an aftermarket head unit with better maps and a friggin touch screen. (The **** sucks)

K&N filters = snake oil and the folks who say they make an improvement are snake oil fanboi lemmings.

If you'll try to read a little closer, I said that after having cleaned mine I noticed a difference.

Awesome post though.

lol... snake oil fanboi lemmings.

The only thing I've heard about K&N filters is that they are pretty greasy, and sometimes that grease clogs and messes up the MAF sensor.

I'm not sure how true that is but it makes sense.

I've run K&N on both of my previous cars and plan to on the Audi when it comes time to replace the air filter. If you're expecting 15hp, forget it. If you're expecting to let your engine breathe a little better and not replace paper filters every 5000 miles, K&N is great.

As for the rest of the questions, the only one I can speak to is idle. Mine's a bit rough at idle. It's just like a light diesel rumble. It's just the FSI fuel injection and it doesn't bother me. The dealer replaced all 4 coils and the high pressure fuel pump before I bought the car, so I feel pretty good about it.
