Default Audi Engineers on Oil Change

Much discussion over the past few years on oil burning, oil changes and how often to do it...okay i figured out why the Audi manual only wants you to change every 10k...this has caused a stir in the past cause and i follow the manual plus i and know audi engineers are a whole bunch smarter than me...well the reason you only have to change the oil every 10k is BECAUSE I ADD 5 new quarts between every oil change :-) So in all actuality, 20% fresh & new oil is always in my engine :-) (a quart every 2k)

I have an idea..... Type the words "Oil Consumption" into Google... And one at a time type every manufacturer before it and see how every other brand has the same problem.

And after your done with that..... Change oil consumption with Carbon.

You'll find out that every car has the same problem as they try to squeeze more MPGs out of every engine

I don't agree. I have 4 vehicles . A 1977 , 1989 , 2008 and a 2010. None are Audi's and none burn a drop of oil between 5000 mile oil changes. A V8 , IL4 , V8 and a V6. One with 4 carbs and the others are EFI. Mileage range from 8,000 to 313,000 Miles. None are turbo and all except 1 have greater then 200HP. Now my kids 2007 A4 has 40,000 miles and uses 1 quart per 1500-2000 miles. I change it every 5,000 miles and the bottom end is dry as a bone. So if all 4 banger turbo's use about the same then I call this a poor design. My kid enjoys the car and if we were to buy another it would be the V6 version non-turbo. As I mentioned before I have never had a car that burned a quart as much as these A4's seem to do. I've been driving since 1961 and the only car that I remember being in that used this much oil was my fathers brand new 1953 Ford with an OHV V8. That was a quart every 500 miles. The dealer told us to change the oil every 3000 miles and you won't need to add any , LOL.

well guess what..

i've said it a thousand times; turbos are extremely tough on oil. the whole consumption thing is misinterpreted as simple boiling off of the lighter components in the oil. as the lighter ends boil off you're left with less oil.

do the naturally aspirated audi folks here on this forum talk about "oil consumption"? no.

This all strikes me as a bit strange. I've had a couple of VW GTi turbos and now a 2LT Audi A3 and none have burned any oil at all, I've never had to top up between changes. Before the VAG cars I had a couple of Mitsubishi turbos and they never did either. Is it something different with the US spec models? I can't imagine so, but it sounds very odd to me.

Newbie to the forum. I am thinking about buying a B7 but am getting more than a little scared about the oil consumption of the 2.0. My previous car was a VW TDi, and it burned no oil in the recommended 10k oci. I owned a 2005 Subaru WRX with a 2.0L turbo, and it burned no oil between changes (5k oci). I drove both of these cars fairly hard, but not to the point of abuse.

I find it hard to believe that there isn't a problem with the rings in the Audi 2.0 either not being properly seated during engine break-in, or a faulty design of the oil control rings. For those burning 1qt every 1500 miles, are there signs of excessive smoke when driven hard? What is the long term damage of the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors?

Thanks in advance for any replies or advice.

I had a 2004 Saab 9-3 2.0T (turbo) and I never added a drop of oil. I had the oil changed maybe every 15K miles. I drove that thing extremely hard too....I'm talking new tires every 8K - 12K miles.

What manual are you getting 10k from? I don't have my manual yet for my 2008 2.0 but the Chilton's manual I have said it's every 5k miles, not 10k.

I've owned four cars, one used oil three didn't. My V6 Olds Cutlass Ciera, GLX Jetta, and 2006 Audi A4 never use/d. My Grand AM with the Quad Four motor used on average half a quart every 2000 miles sometimes more sometimes less. Even the oil countdown monitor in the dash of the A4 is set for 5000 miles, not 10,000 miles.
