Default Cam follower / PCV valve ?

So I scheduled a 40k service tune-up at the dealer today for my A4 (cpo), and I requested that they replace the PCV valve and cam follower as I understand they are prone to wear and tear and a common problem on the B7 models. The service person on the phone said that he had never heard of these issues.. I find that hard to believe.

What do you think, is he blowing smoke up my ***?

He said he would have them check the PCV valve and cam follower and replace them if necessary.

I'm having my DV and cam follower replaced this Friday. They'll give me both parts and I'll post pics of the used cam follower here on this site. They were also surprised when I asked them to replace them.

service writers at dealerships dont really know much about the cars in my experience. It is definitely something you should be replacing and inspecting often.

Once the PCV and DV are replaced with the upgraded versions available on the market, the only thing that would need checking is the cam follower. And inspection of it should not that often. I plan to check mine every 25,000 miles or so.

Here's a permanent fix for the PCV:

turbofan, the PCV and DV generally seem to blow on tuned cars. mine are still stock but i plan to chip it later.

Tell them to talk to a VW tech person. Way more VW's out there and all the VW dealers know about this. I think if your Audi service guy is either just dumb or playing dumb. The PCV is one of the biggest issues out there they ever replace along with the DV. The cam follower is less known but I bet the actual technition knows about it. They just don't want to do the work to look at it. Although it is a 15 minute job.

Thanks for the info guys. It looks like I'm best off doing things like this myself, right? How difficult of a job is it to replace the PCV valve and cam follower? I have basic automotive experience (i.e. On my previous 2001 A4 1.8t i replaced the DV, n75 valve, air intake, filters, oil change, stuff like that).

The dealership just called me and told me the cam follower still looks good. They'll give the used cam follower to me when I go pick the car up. This is the original cam follower and it's been through 51,000 km (32,000 miles). I'm starting to think that some of these people who say they have worn cam follwers must be using aftermarket fuel pumps with stiffer springs or something. There's so much BS out there.

I had mine recently inspected and was told it looked good as well (29k miles on it). The conspiracy theorist in me says that they are just waiting until my car goes out of warranty in September at which point I need to pay out of my pocket to do any of this major engine work if it does break.

No not really, the only ones i have seen fail are the early B7's, if you have one after 06 i bet audi pumped up the steel strength on the follower and kept it quiet. Audi has been known to do stuff like that since the unintended accelleration thing in the 80's.....kinda like toyota is going thru now LOL. However i have only seen them fail on engines with over 50k on the clock.
