Default iPod adapter question...

I have read all the old threads on the subject, but still haven't been able to come to a good conclusion. What is the best iPod adapter for the B7 Audis?

I have a 2006 A4 with the Bose system and the in-dash CD changer/cassette combo Symphony head unit. I have XM as well, but don't subscribe, so I wouldn't be concerned about losing it to the iPod adapter.

I'm looking for one that does text to the display (the Dension looks like it does) if possible, but that's not a deal breaker. I would prefer if it didn't disable the iPod wheel navigation. I probably won't just put my iPod in the glove compartment all the time.

Any thoughts? It seems the DICE one is pretty inexpensive and easy to install, but it looks pretty basic (just audio and control). The Dension looks a little better, but their site was way complicated (100, 300, 500 Five? Which one do I need), so I'd probably end up having to call them to figure out exactly what I needed to order.

Go to Audi.com and go to the accessories. There is a special adaptor that you can buy. I believe you will have to disconnect the XM. It allows you to control and scroll through 5 playlists. Go to the page for more info.

I installed a GROM adaptor in my wife's 06 A3 (Symphony with 6 CD changer) to hook up to a ipod touch. It is really easy to install. The only tricky thing was to fish the ipod adaptor cable through the side panel. It works very well and does not lock up the ipod. Check it out at http://www.gromaudio.com

This website has been a great resource for this stuff, Ipod Car Pros.

Here is a link to the models they carry:

I just bought the one at the bottom (PIE), but haven't installed it yet. It should cover all of the features you need at a pretty cheap cost too.

EDIT: just noticed you had a 2006, looks like your only choice per this website is the DICE model.

Well, I'm still confused. I've even considered changing out the entire head unit for a USB/iPod capable one, but I'm just not sure I want to go there with my Audi.

I think as far as the PIE adapter, you're right ryob--it appears it won't work with my 2006 non-nav radio. Dension claims they have one that works with the 2006, but when you dig down into their site, I can't actually find a way to order one, so maybe they don't really.

The DICE one is definitely leading the way--I guess I'm just still sad I can't get text through it. I can probably live without that, though. It's reasonably priced and seems easy enough to install myself.

Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know how easy this install is? Is it just pop the radio out using the keys, plug it into the back, nest the adapter, and feed the Ipod cable? Do I need to worry about radio codes or putting the adapter in a specific place or anything like that?

So, Enfig lists the Dension GW16AC2 as compatible with the 2006 non-nav radio (http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s...N_GW16AC2.html). Anyone have personal experience? I might just give them a call and see about it. It's not that much more than the DICE adapter and if it adds text to the display in the instrument cluster, that extra $$$ might be worth it to me.

I'm leaning toward the DICE one. Enfig has some great demo videos of the different units. The Dension just looks way complicated and expensive. I think the DICE one does most of what I want and Amazon has it for $120 shipped.

Ryrob, the DICE instructions tell you to disconnect the battery, but we all know that's not a good idea in our Audis. As long as you don't pull the radio completely out (just unplug the one connector you need to plug the DICE into), you shouldn't need the radio codes.

It was pretty much that. Here's a video from Enfig that walks you through it, but it was pretty easy. I left my battery connected and only unplugged the cable that I had to (leave the one next to the 10A fuse plugged in) and I didn't need radio codes. The hardest part I had was packing it all back in and getting the radio seated with all that stuff back there. I went ahead and put the DICE box behind the radio since it's relatively easy to pull the radio out if I need to get to it. I wrapped it in bubble wrap so it hopefully won't rattle back there.

I fed the iPod cable down to the passenger floor-well and tucked it under the trim back to the center console area. For now, I'm just laying the iPod next to the shifter. It works, but maybe someday I'll invest in a mount.
