Looking into buying a B7 as my first car
I just wanted to know what I should be looking for in a B7, mileage and price wise. I can do around $6000-$7000 maybe a little more if needed. Please help with letting me know what kinds of things break after 100k cause i know that a lot of things will cost a lot to repair. Or if you guys have any other suggestions for first cars.
Honestly, this is such a huge question. There is a sticky at the top of the forum that talks about common issues. Some are easy fixes, some are easy if you do it before it blows up on you, and some are expensive.
At 100k, maintenance is going to start eating you. If you can only afford $6-7k total without having some put back for maintenance/repairs (or being able to do that yourself), an older Audi may not be for you. I've put about $4k into my car in the last 20k miles (I'm at 95k now) and am still limping along with a slowly failing torque converter (another $3-4k).
At that mileage, the biggest things are going to be timing belt/water pump (about $1000-1200 anywhere), cam follower (small and inexpensive, if there's nothing wrong with it--expensive if it's shot), control arm bushings, engine mounts (possibly), and coolant flange (another small, inexpensive part that is pretty labor intensive to get to).
Not trying to scare you away, but buying these cars at the top of your budget is just a recipe for disaster unless you are very mechanically inclined and have access to good tools.
