I have heard this on both my A4 and on a loaner A3. When I open the driver's door I hear some mechanical whirring sound coming from what sounds like somewhere in the engine compartment. Any clues as to what this is?

That is the electric fuel pump bringing the fuel pressure up. Happens on all Audis and VWs.
