Those who received the red T later (2006-2007) had sport suspension added but no Sline package. And of course if anyone has a red T for 2008 you already have the Sline body kit, but added the suspension. I was also told that Europe A4's (and A3's?) with the Red T meant the cars had the 220hp motor in them, but I am not too sure on that one.

I was thinking of adding the red T to mine when I first got it, (2007 2.0T) but now I like the classy look of just a silver T with the Dolphine Gray Met color.
I love all the competing explanations. Unfortunately this one can't be completely correct because I have a 2006 S-Line, FWD, with the red T.

I used to have a 2001.5 Audi A4 1.8T a while back and it was totally stock (even no Quattro). The only options it had were HIDs, silver paint, and moonroof. And it had the "Red T".

I remember reading that the "T" was made "Red" for 2001.5 only. Or was it 2001? I believe it was to distinguish this "newer" model from the previous versions. Not sure though.

Find somebody with a VAG-COM and have them recode module 17 to turn off that annoying seat belt chime. Search for the procedure to do this - might even be on the Ross-Tech.com site.

And for those of you trying to figure out what option(s) warranted that red T, you all need to compare your list of factory options to find a pattern. In the spare tire well in your trunk, by the right rear tail light, there is a small white sticker that lists a bunch of 3 character option codes (among other codes). Write that list down, or take a decent picture of it. It's hard to tell zeros from ohs, but I believe they will all be zeros.

I have a spreadsheet (too big for an attachment to this forum, even zip'd) that will translate those codes into a description. If someone can host it, or make it available to others, PM me and I'll email it to you.

The red 'T' use to mean a higher HP motor was installed (187 v 161)... don't know what it means now.

For 2002, Audi upgraded power in the 1.8 Turbo engines to 163 PS (120 kW; 161 bhp) and 190 PS (140 kW; 187 bhp) - the 190 PS variant designated by a red 'T' on the boot lid, with both available with quattro, and in the 2.5 TDI intermediate version to 163 PS (120 kW; 161 bhp).
Emblems with the characteristic red "T" on the engine cover and at the rear of the vehicle point to what is currently the most powerful turbo engine in the A4.

Well after further reading on the "famous" red "T" I have found that on the B5's it meant more HP (1.8 red T up from 150hp to 170hp US, 180hp for Europe). The B6 up from 150,163hp to 190hp. The B7 is still kind of a mystery though. All I can see on the U.S. side is some type of sport seats, or suspension. No HP increase though. Even S Line models I see (2007, 2008 BWT engines) have silver T's and some have red T's. Quattro's and non Quattro's. 6Mt's and Auto's. Options the same for both.

how do you have the front end of the 2006 a4 on your 2005? Does this mean your car was made like mid 2005? is it still considered a b6? or now a b7 with the new front end?

The B7 models started in Europe in 2005. The B7 was a major update to the B6. So in a sense it is kinda like a B6 but with serious mod's to the suspension, exterior and engines, as well as transmissions. Also saftey features were upgraded for the B7. (The list goes on but....)

The New B8 models started here in Sept 2007, while in the US the B8's did not start until the end of 2008. It seems like the US gets the model updates a year after the Germans do.
