Default What to watch for when buying an Audi

Hi Members;
Newbie to the site, whoever wrote that Newbey post needs to get some sleep.

So I'm looking at buying a 2005 A4AWD 3.0 convertible with just over 100k miles on it and need some advice from the experts:

1) How do I tell if its a B6 or a B7?

2) I've never purchased an Audi before, what should I be looking for when checking out an A4? It looks like there are some significant maintenance items that should occur around 100k, are there any warning signs I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance - Stovebolt

Look at the front bumper. B6 has a protruding plastic bumper like a typical car. B7 has a flat front.

B6

B7

Given that the one you're looking at has a 3.0L, I think that puts it in the B6 range. I believe they moved to 3.2L (in the V6) for the B7.

Don't think there are a lot of 3.2 owners on here. What I would do is take it to an auto repair place (or a trusted mechanic). Have them run over the car for you. For about $50 they will probably give you a list of what they think needs to be repaired or replaced. From there you can make a more informed decision on if the car is for you.

As for warning signs they are the same with an Audi as any other brand. Drive the car and visually inspect it for areas of concern. For example an engine bay that is spotless with a shine to the rubber and plastic means they cleaned the engine up. That has always been a red flag for me. I would rather see a little dirt and oil that a spotless engine.

Since it is a convertable I also suggest running it through a wash. That way you can check for leaks with the top.

3.2 is not an easy motor to work with as a 2.0t. If you can afford dealer service than that shouldn't be a problem. I'd get a later model.
