Smile A4 dry black soot exhaust gas

Hi all,

Can anyone can help on this one?

My 2009 A4, 2.0T blows out a puff of dry black smoke on morning start ups, and thereafter ONLY when I change down a gear...or accelerate hard on the higher gears.

There's no oil - just dry black soot/smoke, and usually just a puff.

There is no powder visibly blowing when the car is driving at a consistent speed on any gear.

1. Mileage is 167000km
2. Oil consumption is aprox 500ml every 300-400 km's

Any advice please?

Have a oil consumption check. 2009 bad rings = excessive oil consumption.

Thanks for the advice.

Am busy with the oil consumption check now.

Do you know if any recall or query on the 2009 rings?

If you fail the consumption test they will replace the rings & pistons. Once that is done, all is well.

Unless my conversions are wrong it looks like you are using 1/2 quart of oil every 250 miles. Is that right? If so you have a major oil consumption problem.

Thanks for the reply

Hoping it passes but based on consumption since I did the test, it looks like it will surely fail. Done about 400 kms and already used 500ml oil :-(

FYI: rings and pistons in south africa are about R40 000 (or apox 8000 euro)

You are correct,

Getting ready to have pistons and rings changed. Test does not look posiive so far

PS: Am considering an aftermarket centre to have them done, as Audi will cost about 8000 euro (aprox R40 000 rands in south afrcai)

Press Audi for some help. This is a known issue with 2009-2010 2.0TSFI engines.
