looking at a 2012 A4
hello.
A close friend of mine is selling his 2012 A4 S Line. the car is immaculate, absolute showroom condition. car has a clear wrap on it, not a scratch.
the car has 51,000 miles on it. I can buy the car for 11,000.
the car has 19 inch wheels and is lowered 3 inches.
i think this is a good deal but I am hesitant because audis reliability. i read almost all the 100 pages on the high oil consumption thread. I am concerned that being a 2012 it could possibly suffer from HOC. I have the VIN, is there a way to check the year and month built, they say that the newer 2012s shouldnt have this issue.
questions -
- do you guys think this is a great price for the car ?
- if the car suffers from HOC can I just add oil or do you have to replace the block
- can i check the year / month via VIN ?
- do you have to do the timing chain like a belt or is it lifetime ?
- are there any other known issues to look into before buying this car ?
thanks

If the car is NOT using ANY oil at 51K miles then you should not see a significant degradation of usage in the future. Make sure you are clear with his meaning of "it does not use any oil". Does he normally check the oil regularly and if so has he ever seen any level mark below full on the oil level screen. Where and at what mileage does he have the oil changed. How many miles are on his last oil change. If more then 3000 then you check the level and see what it says. Remember Audi says that normal oil usage is 1200 miles a quart (or liter) is acceptable. Don't over react here just do your homework. Also why is he selling it. Remember selling a used car to a friend can affect the friendship as problems crop up , which they will.

Agree with above poster about asking your friend about oil consumption. But caveat emptor. I test drove mine 100+ miles (it had just under 100k miles on the odo) and it did not use oil; took it MI-to-FL and it did not use oil; but over the past four years and 40k additional miles it now uses a quart every 400-500 miles. So it could deteriorate as the rings wear. The other concern I have is 19" rims and the lowering if you drive in snow. The cars are great in snow up to about 9-10". Lowering the car does not help. 19" rims use tires with very thin sidewall and are more susceptible to pot hole damage. Having said all that, I have 140k miles on the car and no issues other than oil consumption. Everything works. The only major repair was strut replacement at 123k.

after careful consideration I decided to not buy the car. I’ve had 3 Audi’s and they were all expensive to own and repair. I’m looking at 2015 TLXs right now. Had many Acura’s as well. By far the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Nothing drives like a German car tho.

That was a good price, though! I bought my 2012 A4Q PP for quite a bit more, and it has 72k miles. however, it was from a dealership, and the first un-modded/no salvage 6M I found relatively near me in a few months of searching.
