Default Need Winter Tire/Wheel Selection Advice

I know this has been talked about some on the forums, but I wasn't able to find anything related to the concerns I have.

I am the proud owner of a 2012 a4 quattro premium plus S-line. The stock tires are 245/40-18 pirelli p6 four seasons. I have been doing some research on tirerack and was curious which tire/wheel size would be the best for winter.I'm wondering if I should downsize and whether thread width is much of a consideration. Mainly, I'm interested in a dedicated snow tires (blizzak ws70) since I've moved from Texas to eastern Washington.

The stock pirellis in 245/40-18 hav a sectional width of 9.9", tread width of NA, and overall diameter of 25.7".

The WS 70 in 225/50-17 have a sectional width of 9.2", tread width of NA, and overall diameter of 25.9".

The WS 70 in 245/45-17 have a sectional width of 9.6", tread width of 7.6", and overall diameter of 25.7".

Would the WS 245/45-17s be a better option for the narrower tread width?

Should I just get these wheels in 18" with blizzaks and call it a day?

Thanks for the help.

the pirelli P6 are very nice all season tires. my audi came stock with them and they worked well in the snow and on the ice. i have since switched to dedicated summer tires and winter tires. for the winter tires i chose the continental extremewintercontact. they are fabulous and i'd recommend them to anyone. i'd go with 17".
