Default Pistons & Rings Seems To Have Worked

My 2009 A4 2.0T got as bad as going through a quart every 8 or 9 hundred miles when driven ...uh.... briskly. Took it to the dealer and they did the CPR valve and software bit, which did improve things to a quart in about 2,200 miles. I was happy, but was told to bring the car in the next time the MMI said I needed oil. Did so, and Audi said they were not happy with a quart in 2,200 miles, or with the results of their Part 2 Test, so they ordered the parts to do the pistons & rings, which also required a number of other parts in the process. They found that the water pump was leaking and fixed that at the same time. It took the 3 days to do the job once they started, but over 3,000 miles later, I think it has used about a CUP of oil, not enough to replace. I bought a non running in place dip stick for this engine, so the estimate is pretty accurate.

All in all, if it continues to use oil at the current rate, I'm satisfied. A quart in 5,000 miles or so wouldn't bother me a bit.

I've been following along on this thread.
My 2004 VW 1.8T w/77k miles - uses virtually no oil every 5K miles
My 2010 VW Tiguan 2.0T w/61k mikes - uses virtually no oil every 7.5K miles

My 2009 Audi A4 2.0T w/63k miles is using 1 Q/L every ~2300 miles. I just had the consumption test performed and the low oil light has come on at ~ 2400 miles. I dropped it off today and by all indications, the service adviser was telling me they would replace the pistons and rings.

Waiting to hear for sure...but expect that it will happen. If they replace the pistons and rings, I would hope it would use as little oil as my other 2 VW autos at which point I would be satisfied.

Time will tell.

As an update to this thread, I traded in my 2010 A4 (which was burning a quart of oil every 6-8 weeks) at the beginning of November on a 2014 A4. I have 4,300 miles on the new car and the oil gauge is at half. Essentially, Audi appears to have remedied the problem on its new models. I haven't had to add a drop.

I'm sorry but it appears you are pre-conditioned to accept this. The correct statement should be "I have 4,300 miles and the oil gauge is still FULL."

If that's the "new norm", I am not going to be happy.

Got my car back after 3 days at the dealership. They had all the parts in stock and did the work very fast. The service adviser tells me his "best guy, works like a surgeon...blah blah blah" did the work and that Audi wants to make this right and that the repairs cost Audi around $5k. I said, "Good!". This the most expensive of the 4 VW products I have had over the last 4 years (2 Audis, 2 VWs) and $5k is a pittance to them. I had an older A6 that I should've never continued to repair given how bad it was in the end.

So when I gave Audi another chance by buying this A4, well, love the car, but it better not use any more oil than the 2 VWs do, which is virtually none.

As a side not, the 2010 Tiguan has me spooked with some awful electrical problems and the best car of the 4 I have is the 2004 Passat 1.8T 4Motion.

That may also be the only one I keep in the long term depending on how these other two pan out.

What would you all recommend as the correct usage of oil on a brand new car (given that new cars usually burn more oil in the beginning anyway). Given that the oil gauge is at the half mark with nearly 5,000 (new) miles driven, and would require oil at the 10,000 mile mark (were I not going into the dealer for my prescribed 5,000 mile service)... are you saying that the oil use has not improved? I'm on my fourth A4. I'm getting the use of the oil I was getting in my 1998 and 2003 models at this point. The 2010 was the model that used oil to the tune of needing to refill every 2,000 miles or so.

I don't own the Audi but my daughter does. It is her 2nd (now 2009) and although a great car the exception is the oil consumption. I maintain the car and it gets around 2800-3000 miles per quart . I change the oil every 5000 miles so in all practically it uses a little over a quart per oil change. I have been driving since 1962 and had always changed oil at 3000 miles until the mid 1980's. So that being said I never had a engine use any , 0 oil between oil changes. By the way my cars consisted of Jaguars , Corvette's , Lexus and a few other Chev trucks. Some used and some new. So my answer to you is I would expect to use ZERO , 0 , NONE , oil in 5000 miles . I don't care if the engine is NA or turbo if it is designed properly it should use no oil. She puts up with it because she likes the car and at this point $9 for a quart isn't a big deal. Also for those who don't think they have the problem they are kidding themselves. I have not seen any other car manufacture have a standard multi phase plan to correct oil consumption. That in itself says something about the engine design. So enjoy the car and just make a habit of checking /adding oil.

What he said, ZERO. As I said in my post, my '04 Passat 1.8T and my '10 Tiguan 2.0T use ZERO at a service interval of 5k miles, so why should I accept anything less on my '09 A4?

Default 2.0 T oil consumption can get quickly worse

I would like to warn all who are still in warranty and putting up with oil consumption which passes Audi oil consumption test.

The problem can unexpectedly get much worse after the 50K warranty expires.

My A4 burned a less than a 1 quart every 1200 miles at odometer 48,000 so no repair by Audi.

Now at 61,000 odometer miles, I am burning a quart every 360 miles!!

The smoke coming out of the tail pipes is tremendous and obscures vision.

The car is useless unless you are James Bond!
