What's the verdict? -Oil Consumption
Audi is considered as a higher class vehicle...I had a civic with a Integra engine turborized and did not burn any oil between oil changes (4000mls) until about 100kmls then 1qt between oil changes and this engine was not built as a turbo engine...Audi's engine is built from the factory so there should be no excuse...it can be done.
Got our car back from the dealer. Rings, Pistons, Front Seal, Software upgrade and a long list of other associated things like bolts, nuts, etc. All costs around 7k but was covered by CPO warranty. Drove it for a few days and the engine light came on and the oil level never went to 100%. Returned the car, two weeks later we get it back with a new fuel pump and fresh oil. So far we've had it back for a week and no issues. The car has more power and is performing as it did when we bought it 3+ years ago. Oil consumption is an issue with the engine that we have in the car. It is related to the pistons and rings. Anyone who wants to see the dealers list of things replaced, let me know and I'll scan them and email them to you... Maybe I could just post them here.. I'll give it a shot.
Below please see contents of a letter emailed to me by Audi South Africa indicating to me that high oil consumption on an Audi 18.T is normal. I have experienced high oil consumption on my Audi and is still continuing today and it seems Audi will not attend to my issues until the engine packs up due to high oil consumption
"As previously stated in our letter of 01 October 2013, the amount of oil used varies from vehicle to vehicle.
Throughout the Motor Industry, oil consumption of between 500ml to 1liter / 1000 km is considered acceptable.
We trust this information will be of help.

Below are contents of another letter from Audi South Africa regarding high oil consumption that they consider to be normal:
"Every engine uses a certain amount of oil and this can vary from one engine to the next. Audi South Africa regards oil consumption rangingbetween 500 ml to 1 litre / 1000 km as acceptable.
The modern high performance engine operates with higher crankcase pressures due to the higher compression ratios (especially with turbocharged vehicles) and the higher average rev range being utilized.
Under these conditions there is also a need to ensure adequate upper
cylinder lubrication.
This situation results in a small amount of lubricating oil being allowed (designed) to bypass the piston rings into the combustion chamber. It thus lubricates the entire cylinder wall, where it also assists in valve guide lubrication especially in the extremely hot exhaust valve.
It is therefore beneficial for the engine to consume a small amount of oil as per the specification set out above.

Good Luck, it seems we are the only people that can see the problem but not the manufacturer. The bottom line is Audi's consume oil

ok so after having part one of the test completed I have driven about 500 miles and the oil light has come on again. calling the dealership tomorrow to schedule a part 2 test. at this point i'm just thinking about calling it a waste of time and money and trading in the car for something else
You guys are lucky to have to add oil every 1,200-1,500 miles. My '09 A4 consumes its oil like a guy in the bar. I brought it to the dealer about a year ago and complained that I have to add 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles and they told me that it is within the acceptable level of oil consumption. They gave me a loaner so that they could check on my complaint. When I got the car back, nothing changed. Now, after a year, it is consuming 1 quart of oil every 650 miles. I'm so frustrated that I am now thinking of selling of selling not just my '09 A4 but also my '07 A4 and the '05 Allroad and not even consider Audi for my next purchase. So frustrated.
If your car is under 50,000 miles complain to Audi of America and they should give you new pistons to fix the problem for free. If your car is over that mark, like mine was, still complain and they will work out a deal with you. I just got my car back after going through this process and Audi was very fair and reasonable about it. They paid more than half of the cost for the piston change and now the car is driving better than ever and hopefully won't be eating oil and longer.

My 09 A4 Avant with 51,000 miles had a few issues in March, beginning with the oil sensor, then a thermometer, and o ring that cost me $1800. In July, the turbo went out (parking brake malfunction light came on, EPS off) and the dealer explained the breather valve and crank case seal needed to be replaced as well. At first, the dealer wanted to charge me for the crank case seal and o ring but spoke to Audi and determined it is part of the oil consumption issue and repaired it for free. Now, in 600 - 1000 miles I need to return to determine if the engine needs a rebuild. The dealer said 90% with this issue result in the rebuild. I had on occasion needed to add oil, but nothing of note, similar to my 03 TT, which never had problems. I love the look and drive of my Audi, but this is looking to be my second Audi lemon.
To all A4 B8 owners with high oil consumption and who are out of warranty... I just got approved for a new engine, under warranty, with 70K miles on the odometer under the customer "good will" program. Keep the faith.
The only downside is my city might have to raise taxes because they will be losing the most effective mosquito fogger on the road.
