Default '85 5000s Climate Control

Hi folks - I'm new to forum's so please forgive any faux pas' I may make here. I am the proud new owner of a 1985 Audi 5000S (not turbo). It's got 225,000 and it's in beautiful shape (for the most part). Some of it is simply tired... in the immediate the climate control is not working. The grounds to the blower controller are connected properly and not broken. I am getting electrical through the blower control in that the front fan does come on when the climate control unit is set to Low / Hi / Auto / defrost and it goes off as soon as I turn the control unit off, also the defroster works just fine... In the 8 weeks that I've had the car now the blower has come on twice - once when I took a right-hand corner a shade too fast and the other day when I started the car on a particularly cold morning. Each time it was on for about 10 seconds. I was all prepared to hope the blower controller was bad and order a new one to drop in and then it went off again the other morning and now I'm fearing there might be something deeper... wiring??? (ugh, not looking forward to removing my dash to replace wiring a harness(es). Does anyone have any other trouble-shooting thoughts??

Not sure if this would matter but - I also believe I have to replace the thermostat as I believe it's stuck open. No matter how far I drive the car it never even warms up to the first quarter marker on the temp gauge.

Thanks –

The Audi 5000/100/200 has a problematic climate control. The early 5000 had analog controllers and I am not sure if you can flash some trouble codes. The 100/200 models used a digital controller and you can use the built in diagnostic feature to check for problems. Audi uses a Harrison CCOT system, the same system was used on some high end GM models like Cadillac, Buick, etc. The most common problem is a defective servo flap servo and or corroded contacts for the bazillion temperature sensors.
