I have a 1990 audi V8 Quattro and the alternator took a crap. I need to know if there is a certain kind of alternator I need to replace it with.. or can I use something else, thats cheaper.

There are many scrap/junk yards around here and finding a new one there would be pretty easy if I didn't have to have a special kind.

take it to autozone, check if you could repair it first. Could be the bridge or the brushes. each replaceable, the coiled part of the alternator like stator, would be hard to replace.

Could be simple brushes, if all you have is low voltage when running.

you got to use alternator that has same mounts. Unlikely you find an alternative alternator. So you have to use same model alternator, from a junk yard or a dealer or some store.
