Hi All

i have a 1988 Audi 80 Quattro with the inline 5 cyl. it has a horrible ticking sound coming from the engine. I dont believe its a lifter or other valve train component, ONLY because if i shut the engine off... the ticking sound continues for just a few seconds after the engine has stopped.

what is the root cause of this annoying noise and can it be fixed?

get your head into the engine bay and locate the offender chances are its a relay
