Default Engine Ticking

Dear all,

I have just bought a 1993Audi 90S V8 with 224,000 kilometers 150,000 mileson it, engine has a ticking sound when accelerating. To try to lessen the tick I used a 20w 50W oiland changed the filter. Ticking may have improved a little but that might be just wishful thinking. How can I tell if this is lifters or a duff engine. Car also has pre-ignition even though I run 94 octane gas. The pre-ignition does not happen when you would expect it to (going up hill under load) it happens just as you start to give the engine gas (when lightly accelerating)goes away when you accelerate hard. I hope I haven't bought a load of rubbish. It's black and beautiful but the engine worries me.

What do you think?

David

Sounds like you need a full tune up, & an engine flush, possibly an injector/valve cleaning.
I'm thinking there is a ton of deposits in the engine & it might have a sludge problem.

Thanks for the fast reply, I'm pleased you think it may be a tuneup rather than a new engine.

check the timing also and lower viscosity oil like 5w30 or 0w40 , 0w40 would be the best

Sound like just the lifters to me. A tuneup and a replacement of the lifters should solve the problem. Because they are hydraulic they are very easy to replace. Cheap too. You just need to pull the camshaft and swap em out. Definetely not a timing problem as that would definetly be evident under load on a hill.

the car can adjust the timing by itself delay or advance ... so it can be a few of degrees of ... i dn't know about that perticular model but mine can compensate 15 deg at least
