Default Just bought 89' A90... have a few q's

Hey guys, My dad found a deal he couldnt pass. It is a 1989 A90. It is red on tan with 212,000km and auto. Not to bad wit rust, but Its starting slowly. The seller said that it needed a starter. The deal was made at $50 and we have yet to bring the car home yet.

Can someone please tell me about this car, I had no luck researching but maybe I just dotn know where to look. Any specs, and some possible things to check before I decide to keep for my winter car.

Thanks in advance,

///Matt

I just got an audi 90 myself and have yet to get it on the road. it is also a 1989 and mine is not a quattro meaning it is front wheel drive. It is a 5 cylinder engine. I had to change the starter and it was like $200 for a new one so I got one at a junk yard and it is working ok so far.
Good luck with the car

I usually enjoy working on my car as long as things dont get too ugly. The one thing that drives me nuts with audis is the cost of commonly replaced parts. Alternator and starter are great examples. They run close to $250 each for a reman. It seems like the cost of parts for audis equals the cost of having the work done by a shop on an accord or camry or other common japanese car. I figure its the price I pay for owning something I really like. So, be prepared to to pay more than you may be used to for parts, and do the work yourself to save some money. Make sure you keep up on your automatic transmission service, and do not ignore any oil leaks.

As far as I can see, the starter is as good as you can get, BUT, they do have a set of plastic planetary gears in the front, the gear reduction. The entire assembly will fracture, and lock up. It will click, not turn. That is the only part that needs replaced,
Unfortunatelyu, I have no idea what they cost, as I simply buy another used starter from a boneyard that may break tomorrow.

2 bolts to remove, no biggie.

Cheers,

George

Dog, Did you mean to say 50 bucks in your first post? Jaysus, lad, it's worth more than that in scrap value.

You is lucky, Lad.

Cheers,

George

No, they really are 250 here for a reman. I had to buy one for my old 5k and I have receipts with my current 5k. 239 actually, but over 250 after tax.

Dog,

Sorry, I meant bmwblackbeauty, he says his dad paid 50 bucks for the CAR!

I didn't doubt the price of a starter, though I'll search a little to find you a better price, hopefully.

Some 15 years ago I bought a '79 5000 for my daughter, for 250, needed an engine, got one for 250, test drove it, and the fuel pump died. External, in those days. Called an auto parts store, was quoted 271.50 for a new one. Laughed at him, more than I paid for the car.

Went to a friend's boneyard, doesn't do foreign, but had a couple old Audis anyway, cut one out, free, hooked it up in the club parking lot, drove it home. (When the kid wrecked the car, a few months later, was sure to take out the pump before my friend hauled it to the yard. Still have it, no car to use it on. I think they quit using externals in '83.)

Cheers,

George

Have to hunt for planetaries, for the starter, too. Never did get around to that.
